From a rough sketch to a production-ready assembly — Modulabs is a mechanical engineering studio embedded inside a manufacturing workshop. Every design decision we make is grounded in how the part will actually be made.
Mechanical design
Concept to production-ready CAD. Enclosures, brackets, mechanisms, jigs and fixtures — modelled in SolidWorks or Fusion 360 and delivered with full drawings.
Design for manufacture (DFM)
We review your part before it hits the shop floor: wall thickness, draft angles, tolerances, feature access and material selection. Fewer revisions, lower unit cost.
Injection moulding
Low- and mid-volume plastic moulding with aluminium and steel tooling. We advise on gate location, cooling, shrinkage and cycle time — then quote the tool and parts together.
Sheet metal engineering
Bend allowances, hem and flange design, fastener selection and CAD flat patterns for laser cutting, punching and forming in steel, aluminium and stainless.
CNC machining engineering
3- and 5-axis milling and turning strategy. We choose stock form, setups, fixturing and finishes to hit your GD&T without over-engineering the process.
3D printing & prototyping
FDM, SLA and MJF prototyping to validate fit, form and function before you commit to tooling — with material recommendations for each build.
Tolerances & GD&T
Realistic tolerancing based on the chosen process. We call out critical dimensions, datums and inspection points so what you draw is what you get.
Tooling & fixtures
Custom jigs, soft jaws and inspection fixtures — designed and manufactured in-house alongside your production parts.
A design process built around manufacturability
Send sketches, a rough CAD file or just a description of the problem. We respond within one business day.
We propose one or two design directions, flag manufacturability risks and agree tolerances, materials and target cost.
Fully parametric CAD, 2D drawings with GD&T, and a bill of materials — ready for quoting or manufacture.
Print or machine a first article in-house. Test, refine, repeat — usually inside a week.
Move directly into low- or mid-volume production with the same team that designed the part.
Tooling and parts, quoted together
Most moulding projects fail on the tool, not the part. We design the component and the tool in parallel — gates, ejection, cooling, parting lines — so first-shots land close to spec and cycle times stay honest. We handle aluminium prototype tools for hundreds of parts through to hardened steel tools for hundred-thousand-plus runs.
